Sexually transmitted infections

Sexually transmitted infections can be contracted when the mucus membranes (the wet areas) of the genitals, mouth or anus come into contact with each other. Sexually transmitted infections cannot be seen from the outside and you are not always aware yourself that you have contracted one. To avoid them, you should take care to protect yourself during every sexual encounter.

If you notice symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection, go to the doctor. Don't rely on self-diagnosis - let the doctor decide on the appropriate treatment.

Information about practising the safest sex possible is available from many sources. Up to date information combined with the correct attitude encourages safer sex.

It is important to go for health checks and get tested for sexually transmitted infections at regular intervals. It is also recommended that your partner has tests so that he/she can receive the right treatment if he/she is infected.

The community nurse at Pro Centre Finland provides the following free of charge and anonymously:

·        HIV testing

·        Chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis testing

·        Hepatitis A and B vaccinations.

You can see the community nurse at the drop-in.

You can get appropriate treatment for sexually transmitted infections from health professionals.
